FLY A SPITFIRE FROM BLACKBUSHE

Blackbushe Airport is conveniently located to the West of London, just a 45 minute drive from central London and easily accessed via junctions 4/4a of the M3.

Known as RAF Hartford Bridge from 1 November 1942 it has since been home to the photo reconnaissance Spitfires of 16 Squadron , Mustangs of 171 Squadron and Mosquito squadrons 107, 140, 264 and 613.
From 1944 the airfield was renamed RAF Blackbushe before the RAF left in 1946 and the airfield was re-opened as Blackbushe Airport.

RAF Hartford Bridge was one of the designated WWII emergency landing grounds equipped with FIDO (Fog Investigation and Disperal Operation) which involved pipelines with burner jets being ignited along both sides of the runway. The walls of flame that were produced were capable of warming the air sufficiently to evaporate the droplets of dense fog, allowing the aircraft to see and land at the runway. This system saved numerous aircraft from ditching at sea.

Nowadays the airport offers executive facilities for small jet aircraft, flying lessons, simulators and from Summer 2024 Spitfires have returned to RAF Blackbushe with ‘Fly a Spitfire’ experiences!
